Did you know...

In 2010, the Calgary Public Library received a Minister's Award for Innovation in Public Library Service - for the Library's "Living Library" program. This inaugural Award for Innovation recognizes new library programs or services, or new and improved methods of program/service delivery.

Get a Library Card
How do I get a card and what are the annual card fees?
Get your Calgary Public Library card at any branch! Just pay the registration fee and show two pieces of identification, including one with your current Calgary address. Children and young adults require the approval of a parent or guardian to get a Library card. You can renew your card each year by showing identification with your current Calgary address, and paying the registration fee and any outstanding fees.

  •  Adults: $ 12.00
  •  Seniors: $ 9.00
  •  Young adults (13 – 17): $ 6.00
  •  Children: FREE
  •  Replacement card: $ 5.00

If you are receiving Supports for Independence, Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped, Guaranteed Income Supplement, or if you have a Medical Services Card, the yearly registration fee for a Library card may be waived. Please talk to Library staff.
Just visiting? You can purchase a temporary Library card for $20.00 that will be valid for three months. Just bring in two pieces of identification and inform us of your temporary Calgary address. You can borrow three items at a time and get daily Internet access with your temporary card.



Services Available at Each Library BranchOnline databasesWe have hundreds of online databases that can provide you with valuable information. Find current newspapers, journal articles, statistics, business directories, and more.
Computers with Internet and Microsoft OfficeInternet service and computer use is included in your yearly membership and is available at all Library branches. We also have free wireless access – bring your laptop! Our computers also offer Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Programs for all agesWe have a wide range of free children and adult programs, including Storytimes. Click here to see a list of children and adult programs.
Career resourcesWe have the largest collection of career resources in the city. Whether you need help with job searching, resume writing, or interview skills, Library staff can help you work towards a career suited to your goals.


Borrowing and Returning
Please remember that you are responsible for picking up your holds, and for returning or renewing items on time, even if you do not receive notifications.To avoid hold non-pickup and overdue fees, review your account regularly online or by calling 403-262-2928, and check your due date slips.
Can I borrow from and return to any Library branch?Yes, you can borrow from and return to any of our 17 branches! Enjoy the convenience of using self checkout machines at our Country Hills, Crowfoot, Fish Creek, Nose Hill, Shawnessy, Village Square, and Central branches.When borrowing CDs and DVDs, please take one of the padded envelopes provided to prevent damage when returning these items in the return chutes. You will be charged for any damage incurred from dropping CDs and DVDs in the return chute without a padded envelope.
How many items can I borrow at once?You can borrow up to:

  •  99 books or CDs
  •  30 DVDs
  •  10 'New & Notables'

How long can I keep the items I borrow?Loan periods are three weeks for most books, CDs, magazines, and e-books. It's a one week loan for all DVDs.
How do I know when my items are due back?When you sign out an item, you will receive a paper receipt that has the date your Library items are due back.
